Competitions with songbirds in cages: in Suriname as well as in the Netherlands this is a popular hobby for many. The animals are the great passion of many ‘bird men' in both countries and the hobby is important cultural heritage.

Nevertheless, some of the endangered animals end up in haircurlers and toilet rolls at Schiphol Airport, in the Netherlands. Smuggling damages the forest ecosystem, despite protective measures taken by governments in both countries.
